Lara is a PhD Candidate at the University of British Columbia’s Department of Anthropology, Canada, exploring the essential role of informal recycling workers in supporting and producing the urban waste management infrastructures of their hometown Istanbul, Turkey.

Lara received their M.A. in the Anthropology of Media at SOAS University of London and a B.A. in Sociology and Media and Visual Arts at Koç University in Istanbul. As a public anthropologist, Lara’s active engagements with community-driven initiatives providing support to migrants, women, and LGBTQI+ people in Turkey also profoundly informs their research.
